You become part of a listserv by sending an e-mail message requesting a subscription to the list. After your subscription has been accepted, the mailing listserver sends you all the postings to the list. All e-mail messages sent to the list will be distributed to all subscribers' e-mail in boxes. You can unsubscribe at any time.



How to Subscribe to a Listserv

To subscribe to a listserv, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that you are using your own e-mail program and/or settings (so that your e-mail message says that it is from your e-mail address and not someone else's). Address an e-mail message to the following:

    listproc@listproc.wsu.edu

  2. In the Subject heading, don't type anything; leave it blank.

  3. In the body of the letter, include only the following:

    subscribe "listserv_name" "your name"

    Note: Where it says "listserv_name," put the listserv name and where it says "your name," put your first and last name (not your e-mail address). For example, to subscribe to a listserv entitled "DDPDISC," a student named Mary Jones would type the following:

    subscribe DDPDISC Mary Jones

  4. Send the message without a signature

  5. You will be mailed a confirmation and a short message about the use and nature of the listserv. It is important that you keep this message as it tells you how to unsubscribe from the list. Consider making a hardcopy of the confirmation message. If you do not receive a confirmation shortly after subscribing or if you experience difficulties, please e-mail the list manager (usually the instructor of the course).


You only need to subscribe once, to get on the list. Any messages you send to listserv_name@listproc.wsu.edu will be sent to all.



How to Send a Message to a Listserv

Once you have been mailed a confirmation about your subscription to the listserv, you are able to send messages to the listserv. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Address a new e-mail message to the following (be sure to put in the listserv name):

    listserv_name@listproc.wsu.edu

    For example, to send a message to the "DDPDISC" listserv you would type the following address:

    DDPDISC@listproc.wsu.edu

  2. Send your e-mail message as usual, including a subject, body, and signature if you wish.

  3. It will now reach everyone that is on the list including yourself (since you are subscribed to the listserv as well).


How to Unsubscribe from a Listserv

To unsubscribe from a listserv, follow these steps (You must know the name of the listserv from which you wish to unsubscribe before you can start. An example would be listerv_name.):

  1. Make sure that you are using your own e-mail program and/or settings (so that your e-mail message says that it is from your e-mail address and not someone else's). Address an e-mail message to the following:

    listproc@listproc.wsu.edu

  2. In the Subject heading, don't type anything.

  3. In the body of the letter, include only the following:

    unsubscribe listserv_name

  4. Send the message without a signature
