COLLABORATING TO ADDRESS REAL WORLD PROBLEMS:
The goal of the 2007 - 08 contest is to harness the interests and expertise of WSU students to address real world problems encountered by different communities both locally and globally. It is an opportunity for students to practice skills and knowledge in authentic contexts, to develop awareness of local and global issues, and to develop skills necessary to participate in a global society. The contest will provide a shared working space to discuss challenges, share knowledge and resources, and collaborate with experts, stakeholders, and the general public. The contest aims to open new avenues of engagement for WSU as it continues to define its role as a globally interconnected learning institution.

Message from DDP Advisor Jaqueline Almdale

DDP academic advisor Jaqueline Almdale would like to thank her students for their extraordinary patience while she was out over the summer for emergency surgery and recuperation. NEW DDP Staff

New Financial Aid Counselor

Hello. My name is Kathreen Silva – I am the new financial aid counselor for DDP students. I share a similar background with many of you as a non-traditional student. I returned to school as a working mom with a new-born child so I understand and appreciate the difficulties you face everyday of balancing the responsibilities of family, work and school. I remember the feeling of near euphoria when everything seemed to come together and the utter dismay when responsibilities collided.

I now have my degree, along with nearly 10 years of financial aid experience, and am here to help you obtain and keep the financial aid you need to support your education. You can read my reminders about upcoming priority dates and deadlines through the monthly DDP update where I hope to keep you in touch with the administrative details of financing your education and prevent you from slipping through the cracks. I will also write articles for the “DDP Times” which will address special topics in the financial aid arena.

I am here to guide you through the financial aid process and to answer your specific financial aid questions. Please feel free to contact me at finaid@wsu.edu or 800-222-4978.

New DDP Career Counselor

Hello DDP students! My name is Chris Miller, and I am the new DDP Career Counselor. My educational background is in Psychology from Gonzaga University in Spokane, and my graduate studies in Counseling and practice in Career Counseling were completed at Washington State University in Pullman.

What career services are available to DDP students? I can help with career self-assessments, such as inventories of interests, values, skills, and personality. Also, I can help with exploration of school and occupational options, linking majors to careers, performing career and industry research, networking, application to graduate school, performing informational interviews, the job search process, and more.

DDP students who want to explore career options within their major can enroll in Univ 300, a one-credit semester course that helps with career exploration, decision-making, and planning.

If you are interested in career services, please send me an email at careersforddp@wsu.edu or call me at 509-335-4005. I am located in Pullman, but I will be moving to the Seattle area in October. I look forward to working with DDP students, and hopefully I will be able to meet some of you in person at the Learning Centers across the state or in Seattle after I relocate.

New Degree Program & Certificate

BA Women's Studies

Starting Fall 2007, the Distance Degree Programs (DDP) will add Women’s Studies to its ever-growing list of online programs. Offering an online major in Women’s Studies will represent many firsts; it will be the first DDP major focused on the scholarship of diversity and WSU will become the first university in the nation to offer an online undergraduate degree with a major in Women’s Studies.

Students in Women’s Studies courses develop an understanding of how a wide variety of inequalities were created and are reproduced, and ways in which societal change has addressed problems of discrimination and marginalization. Graduates work in a wide range of careers, including human resources, social services, marketing, journalism, digital media, the arts, and education. Find out more: BA in Women's Studies.

Early Childhood Development and Care Certificate

In collaboration with WSU’s Department of Human Development, DDP is also introducing an online certificate in early childhood development and care.

This certificate addresses the complex ways in which child development is influenced by biological, family, neighborhood, school, and community factors, and how this knowledge can be applied to designing innovative and effective programs for young children and their families. The early childhood development and care certificate is ideal for students pursuing a degree in human development who would like to specialize in early childhood, individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another discipline, or persons currently working in the field of early childhood education who have at least 27 semester credits of college coursework. Students who complete the certificate are prepared for careers in institutions and settings that focus on young children. Graduates have been employed at child care centers, pre-school settings, Child Protective Services, and crisis nurseries.

Contact your DDP advisor or student services to discuss degree and certificate options at 800-222-4978.

Flexible Enrollment Courses Being Phased Out

Based on student and instructor feedback, DDP has decided to discontinue its flexible enrollment course offerings. Flexible enrollment courses will be phased out during the upcoming 2007-2008 academic year. We are currently evaluating all flexible enrollment courses for redesign and conversion to the semester-based format. We hope to convert most courses to the semester-based format, and use the conversion process to add new and robust elements to each course. This process will ensure that all DDP courses reflect our commitment to providing students with a dynamic learning environment and the best distance learning experience available.

Spring semester 2008 will be the last semester that students can register for flexible enrollment courses. Students enrolling in flexible enrollment courses will still have the ability to extend the course up to two additional semesters, provided that all conditions of the course extension policy have been met.
