Academic Progress Reports for Spring 2008 Registration

DDP academic advisors currently are working to update students' Academic Progress Reports (APR) for spring 2008 registration, which opens November 5, 2007. The most recent copy of each student’s APR will be posted to My DDP by September 30.

New Requirements for Business Majors

A new requirement for majors in the College of Business, the global learning requirement, has gone into effect beginning this fall semester. The intent of the global learning requirement is to provide students with opportunities to develop skills and knowledge to succeed in the global marketplace. This requirement will apply only to students who were not certified into their major before the beginning of the fall semester, August 20, 2007.

This new requirement is an addition to the degree requirements for students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, which includes both Management and Operations and Management Information Systems majors.

Business majors who are not yet been certified by their department will be notified by their advisor by mail with a letter and an updated Academic Progress Report (APR). The updated APR will highlight changes to the student’s requirements relating to the global learning requirement. Because all students are at varying points in completing their degree and have taken different courses, the new requirement will affect each student in different ways.

If you are a working on a business degree and have not yet been certified into your Management and Operations or MIS major, please watch your mail for your upcoming letter and APR. When you receive that information, please contact your advisor if you have any questions.

DDP Scholarship Opportunities/Deadlines

The deadline for the ASWSU-DDP Scholarship for spring 2008 is November 1, 2007. For details, visit http://distance.wsu.edu/scholar/

The 2008-09 WSU Scholarship Application will be available in early October at http://www.finaid.wsu.edu/scholar/. The deadline for application submission is January 31, 2008.

Complete Your Writing Portfolio to Avoid Registration Holds

Distance Degree Programs students who have completed 60 credit hours but have not completed their WSU Writing Portfolios (EDP 100 or WP 99) will have spring 2008 registration holds placed on their accounts by the Writing Programs Office.

Consult the Writing Portfolio instructions online (WSU Junior Writing Portfolio—DDP Students). If you are not enrolled in EDP 100 or WP 99, log in to My DDP and select "WP 99" to request enrollment. Your first hold can be released when your EDP 100 or WP 99 enrollment is processed and three papers or the exam have been submitted. If you have had two or more Writing Portfolio holds placed, you must complete the portfolio before the hold can be removed. Students are allowed only two semesters to complete the portfolio. Contact DDP student services (800-222-4978 or distance@wsu.edu) if you have questions.

Fall Graduation Application Due at DDP on October 11

Although the graduation application deadline for December 2007 graduates is October 12, 2007, DDP students must make sure their application and application fee of $38.95 arrive at the DDP office by 5:00 on Thursday, October 11. This is because our office must process the payment, and then get the graduation application to the Registrar’s Office no later than 5:00 pm on Friday, October 12.

Make checks payable to WSU.

WSU Application Fee Change

Beginning spring 2008, students submitting the Former WSU Student application will be charged a $25 application fee. You must check your bill (including your fall 2007 bill) in myWSU (www.wsu.edu) , choose Finances on the left, then University Account options. Please also note that students will be assessed a 7% late payment penalty on any unpaid tuition and mandatory fee balance remaining on October 5.

Message from DDP Advisor Jaqueline Almdale

First: I want to thank everyone for their patience and good wishes while I was out in July and August recuperating from surgery. Everyone was so patient with my absence and the many emails and cards touched me deeply.

Now I must be out again for additional surgery but the overall prognosis is very good. I will be having surgery on October 1, and I will be officially out for six weeks. I will, however be working from home after week three. While the healing process requires me to rest a lot--no lifting and very little bending--I have zero patience with sitting around watching my toes twitch while my brain turns to mush, so working from home is a good compromise. Students may contact DDP at the toll free number or the student services email and ask for assistance from other DDP advisors in my absence.

Locate Fellow DDP Students Near You

Your ASWSU-DDP student government officers are continually looking for ways to enhance students’ experience taking online courses. Many students have requested a way to connect and work with other students, so this summer A-DDP developed a “Hometown Locator” program. This program allows you to register in the system and find others who have also registered who live in your geographic area. You can find the program at http://aswsu-ddp.wsu.edu/hometown/. Give it a try!

  • ASWSU-DDP 2007-2008 Food Drive
This year our community outreach will be in the form of a food drive. We are collecting food and/or donations for several food banks. We will be taking food collections during the new Cougar Hardwood Classic event and at the Tacoma Rendezvous.

Our President, Andrew Zander, has secured some very special items from the Athletic Department to be raffled off at each of these events. All you have to do is bring food or money! It’s as simple as that! We want to fill the food banks during the holiday season so organize a company drive, neighborhood drive, or just participate yourself. Bring your donations to a DDP event! Let’s show Washington that Cougar students care!

Visit the ASWSU-DDP website for more information which will be available soon.

  • Student Advisory Board Meeting
On September 9, 2007 Andrew Zander attended the first meeting of President Floyd’s Student Advisory Board (via conference call). He was there representing the DDP student body. He had a chance to voice a common concern we all have. A representative of the Daily Evergreen was on hand and wrote an article. Here is a link to the story:

    http://www.dailyevergreen.com/story/23169

This is just another way your Student Government works on your behalf. Please share with us your concerns or suggestions. We do listen!

However, many have been working hard to make your journey from student to graduate a memorable event. There are many other committees ready and willing to include more members. Get involved! You will be glad you did.

  • Chat Room is available once more!
The Technology Committee has been busy. They have researched, chosen, and implemented a new chat room. This new software has a lot of capabilities and will be great for study groups, hosting committee meetings, or simply students visiting other students. This will be a great addition to other resources provided to ensure that you have all the tools necessary for a successful school year! You will find the chat room at: www.aswsu-ddp.wsu.edu/connection/.

New Degree Program & Certificate

BA Women's Studies

Starting Fall 2007, the Distance Degree Programs (DDP) will add Women’s Studies to its ever-growing list of online programs. Offering an online major in Women’s Studies will represent many firsts; it will be the first DDP major focused on the scholarship of diversity and WSU will become the first university in the nation to offer an online undergraduate degree with a major in Women’s Studies.

Students in Women’s Studies courses develop an understanding of how a wide variety of inequalities were created and are reproduced, and ways in which societal change has addressed problems of discrimination and marginalization. Graduates work in a wide range of careers, including human resources, social services, marketing, journalism, digital media, the arts, and education. Find out more: BA in Women's Studies.

Early Childhood Development and Care Certificate

In collaboration with WSU’s Department of Human Development, DDP is also introducing an online certificate in early childhood development and care.

This certificate addresses the complex ways in which child development is influenced by biological, family, neighborhood, school, and community factors, and how this knowledge can be applied to designing innovative and effective programs for young children and their families. The early childhood development and care certificate is ideal for students pursuing a degree in human development who would like to specialize in early childhood, individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another discipline, or persons currently working in the field of early childhood education who have at least 27 semester credits of college coursework. Students who complete the certificate are prepared for careers in institutions and settings that focus on young children. Graduates have been employed at child care centers, pre-school settings, Child Protective Services, and crisis nurseries.

Contact your DDP advisor or student services to discuss degree and certificate options at 800-222-4978.

Flexible Enrollment Courses Being Phased Out

Based on student and instructor feedback, DDP has decided to discontinue its flexible enrollment course offerings. Flexible enrollment courses will be phased out during the upcoming 2007-2008 academic year. We are currently evaluating all flexible enrollment courses for redesign and conversion to the semester-based format. We hope to convert most courses to the semester-based format, and use the conversion process to add new and robust elements to each course. This process will ensure that all DDP courses reflect our commitment to providing students with a dynamic learning environment and the best distance learning experience available.

Spring semester 2008 will be the last semester that students can register for flexible enrollment courses. Students enrolling in flexible enrollment courses will still have the ability to extend the course up to two additional semesters, provided that all conditions of the course extension policy have been met.
