New Degree Program & Certificate

BA Women's Studies

Starting Fall 2007, the Distance Degree Programs (DDP) will add Women’s Studies to its ever-growing list of online programs. Offering an online major in Women’s Studies will represent many firsts; it will be the first DDP major focused on the scholarship of diversity and WSU will become the first university in the nation to offer an online undergraduate degree with a major in Women’s Studies.

Students in Women’s Studies courses develop an understanding of how a wide variety of inequalities were created and are reproduced, and ways in which societal change has addressed problems of discrimination and marginalization. Graduates work in a wide range of careers, including human resources, social services, marketing, journalism, digital media, the arts, and education. Find out more: BA in Women's Studies.

Early Childhood Development and Care Certificate

In collaboration with WSU’s Department of Human Development, DDP is also introducing an online certificate in early childhood development and care.

This certificate addresses the complex ways in which child development is influenced by biological, family, neighborhood, school, and community factors, and how this knowledge can be applied to designing innovative and effective programs for young children and their families. The early childhood development and care certificate is ideal for students pursuing a degree in human development who would like to specialize in early childhood, individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another discipline, or persons currently working in the field of early childhood education who have at least 27 semester credits of college coursework. Students who complete the certificate are prepared for careers in institutions and settings that focus on young children. Graduates have been employed at child care centers, pre-school settings, Child Protective Services, and crisis nurseries.

Contact your DDP advisor or student services to discuss degree and certificate options at 800-222-4978.

Flexible Enrollment Courses Being Phased Out

Based on student and instructor feedback, DDP has decided to discontinue its flexible enrollment course offerings. Flexible enrollment courses will be phased out during the upcoming 2007-2008 academic year. We are currently evaluating all flexible enrollment courses for redesign and conversion to the semester-based format. We hope to convert most courses to the semester-based format, and use the conversion process to add new and robust elements to each course. This process will ensure that all DDP courses reflect our commitment to providing students with a dynamic learning environment and the best distance learning experience available.

Spring semester 2008 will be the last semester registration that flexible enrollment courses will be available. Students enrolling in flexible enrollment courses will still have the ability to extend the course up to two additional semesters, provided that all conditions of the course extension policy have been met.

More Flex Course News

Flexible enrollment courses are no longer identified by "x" after the course number. In WSU time schedules of classes and the DDP online course listing/catalog, flexible enrollment course names/numbers will be the same as all other WSU courses (e.g., Fine Arts 101x displays as Fine Arts 101) and will be identified by "FX" in a descriptor field (similarly, semester-based courses will be identified by "SB").

Other policy changes to flexible enrollment course registration and tuition that were announced before the Memorial Day weekend will not be implemented as planned. Flexible enrollment tuition will remain at per credit rates (flex credits are excluded from full-time tuition caps) but will increase to the rate noted in the tuition information above; registration for flexible enrollment courses will continue to be possible at any time, not just during the University's open registration period until summer/fall 2008 registration opens.

Course Moving to Blackboard Academic Suite

Starting fall 2007, DDP will move from the course management system WebCT 6/Blackboard Learning System CE (webct.wsu.edu) to the Blackboard Academic Suite (blackboard.wsu.edu). Students who have started flexible enrollment courses prior to fall 2007 will complete these courses in the current WebCT 6 (Blackboard Learning System CE) environment. All DDP courses that start fall semester 2007 will be offered in the Blackboard Academic Suite. The change to Blackboard Academic Suite will introduce a significant difference in the look and feel of the environment, including some changes in terminology.

Here’s a quick look at some of the terminology changes you can expect:

We believe that you will find the Blackboard Academic Suite to be a very user-friendly learning system, with an easy to master interface. We are excited to support students, faculty, and staff as we move into this new environment. Tutorials and technical support will be available to help you get up to speed. As CDPE works to make this conversion as smooth as possible, we’d like to thank students, faculty, and staff for their patience and willingness to embrace this change together.
